  • My thoughts on AI killing us all (30 mins). This post sets out my thoughts after reading If Anyone Builds It above, and how my views on AI risk have changed over time. I wrote this before AI risk really blew up in the media this month, and still stand by the views in this post. However, I do feel more optimistic now that superintelligent AI will not be built anytime soon, now that there is much greater public awareness of the risks.

Yeah, it's been a bit of an AI/tech-heavy quarter. If you're sick of hearing about AI by now, you'll be pleased to hear that my next summary for Kaput is on a completely different topic. It's about Germany's economic model and the problems that the author Wolfgang Münchau sees with it. I expect to publish that in the next week or two.

In it, the authors attempt to distil the most useful techniques from over 100 self-help books into just 368 pages. Spencer founded Clearer Thinking, a research organisation that conducts studies and creates digital self-help tools for the public. I've been following Clearer Thinking's podcast for a few years and have gotten a lot of value from it, so...

My latest summary is for If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies by Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares. The "It" in the title refers to an artificial superintelligence that is vastly more capable than humans across a broad range of domains. The authors argue that once it crosses a certain threshold, such AI would pose an extinction-level threat to humanity. As usual, the key takeaways are below, and you can find the full summary by clicking the link above. KEY TAKEAWAYS What is AI? One way to think...
